  18. <p>     "Allende is here!" shouted the thousands who gathered to
  19. witness the reburial of a former President. In a
  20. government-sanctioned ceremony, the remains of Salvador Allende
  21. Gossens were moved from a family plot to Santiago's central
  22. cemetery, alongside Chile's other past presidents. A Marxist
  23. who tried to introduce radical reform, Allende died, reputedly
  24. a suicide, as troops stormed the presidential palace during a
  25. 1973 coup that led to 16 years of military rule. Current
  26. President Patricio Aylwin, who supported Allende's ouster but
  27. quickly tired of rule by the generals, was faint in his praise
  28. of Allende. But he added, "The pain of the drama that Chile
  29. lived through has taught us that these circumstances should
  30. never be repeated."
